What is Periodontology?
Periodontology is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the soft tissues (gums, periodontal ligament) and hard tissues (bone, cementum) surrounding the teeth, examining and treating diseases that occur in these tissues. A healthy gum should be pale pink in color, have an orange peel-like rough surface and a tight structure.
When oral hygiene is not given enough importance or due to incorrect brushing habits, plaque accumulation occurs on the tooth surface. Plaque hardens under the influence of saliva and turns into tartar. Tartar is a structure containing dense bacteria and is the main source of gum diseases. These bacteria can cause inflammation in the gums (gingivitis), leading to gum recession and bleeding.

Gum Diseases and Symptoms
Gum disease can affect not only the gums but, in advanced cases, the tooth root, the jawbone and the fibers that connect the tooth to the bone. If left untreated, the following symptoms may occur:
Bleeding gums (especially when brushing your teeth or eating hard foods)
Swelling and redness of the gums
Bad breath (halitosis)
Gingival recession and tenderness
Spacing or elongation of teeth
Loosening and loss of teeth

Treatment of Periodontal Diseases
Early diagnosis is of great importance in the treatment of gum diseases. The treatment plan is determined by the severity of the disease and the condition of the gum tissues.
1
Tartar Cleaning (Detertraj)
Dental calculus and plaque accumulated on the tooth surface are removed with the help of ultrasonic devices and special hand tools. This procedure reduces gingivitis and promotes the regeneration of healthy gum tissue.
2
Root Surface Smoothing (Curettage)
In cases where gum pockets deepen and bone loss begins, root surface flattening is applied. With this treatment, the areas where bacteria can harbor are cleaned and the gum tissue is healed.
3
Laser Assisted Periodontal Treatment
As an alternative to traditional surgical procedures, infected tissues in gum pockets are removed using laser technology. Laser treatment offers the advantage of less pain, faster healing and minimal bleeding.
4
Advanced Periodontal Surgical Procedures
When periodontal disease is advanced, gum surgery can be performed to prevent bone loss and tooth loss. These surgical procedures include regenerative treatments, bone grafting and free gingival grafts for gum recession.
5
Gingival Aesthetics (Pink Aesthetics)
A healthy and aesthetic appearance of the gums is an important part of a beautiful smile. Gummy Smile (smiles with excessive gums) or asymmetrical gum levels can be corrected with laser and surgical methods to provide a more aesthetic smile.
Recommendations to Prevent Gum Diseases
Regular tooth brushing: Brush your teeth at least twice a day, using the right techniques.
Use dental floss and interface brushes: Prevent plaque build-up between teeth.-
Use a water flosser: Provides additional support to maintain gum health.
Regular dental check-ups: Prevent periodontal diseases by having scaling every 6 months.-
Avoid smoking and excessively sugary foods: Smoking accelerates gum diseases and slows down the healing process.
